Understanding Motor Rotation: Deciphering CCW and CW Direction Arrows

Zhongshan Broad-Ocean Condenser Fan Motor YDK-180S62823-02 – OEM 0131M00007P

The direction of rotation for electric motors is typically indicated by an arrow on the motor casing. If the arrow points to the left, this is commonly interpreted as counter-clockwise (CCW) rotation when looking at the motor shaft end. This means that if you were to face the end of the motor where the shaft protrudes, the shaft would rotate in a counter-clockwise direction.

It’s important to note that the perspective is crucial here: the standard convention is to determine the direction of rotation from the shaft end, not from the back of the motor.

To confirm the direction:

  1. Locate the arrow on the motor casing.
  2. Position yourself so that you’re looking directly at the shaft end of the motor where the arrow is indicated.
  3. If the arrow points to the left, the motor rotates counter-clockwise (CCW).
  4. Conversely, if the arrow points to the right when viewed from the shaft end, the motor rotates clockwise (CW).

In some applications, especially where motors are part of a larger system, the rotation direction might be referenced differently, or additional indicators may be used. Always refer to the manufacturer’s documentation for the correct interpretation of rotation direction markings.

The following table, lists some common rotation specifications which do not depend on the viewing reference.
Label Descripition
CCW / LE or CCWLE Counter clockwise from the lead end

CCWSE Counter clockwise from the shaft end

CW Rotation Only Shaft can only rotate in a clockwise position

CW / OLE Clockwise opposite lead end

CWLE Clockwise from the lead end

CWSE Clockwise from the shaft end

Double Shaft / CCWLE Spins counter clockwise on a double shaft from the lead end

Double Shaft / CWSE Spins clockwise on a double shaft from the shaft end

CW / CCW or Reversible Clockwise or counterclockwise

ECW Either clockwise or counterclockwise, connected for clockwise rotation at factory

ECCW Either clockwise or counterclockwise, connected for counterclockwise rotation at factory

Reversing Plug Switching the reversing plug changes the rotation of the shaft

CW or CCW The real meaning of these labels is dependent on the manufacturer.
